RESUMO

In 1978, the UK Library Association's newly formed Medical, Health and Welfare Libraries Group decided to establish a newsletter for its members. This paper sets out to describe how that newsletter evolved into Health Libraries Review (subsequently Health Information and Libraries Journal) and became the premier European journal for health-care information professionals. Drawing on both published accounts and personal reminiscences, it focuses on the role played by Shane Godbolt as the Review's founding editor. It analyses and discusses the factors that influenced her work, and concludes by summarising the lasting importance of her achievements as editor.

RESUMO

The creation of the Medical Library Center of New York (MLCNY) was a significant contribution to the history of health sciences librarianship as a model for cooperative, democratic, and practical solutions to the issues of storage and resource sharing. The MLCNY's founding director, Erich Meyerhoff, was a key figure in the successful start-up and ongoing operations of the center, which operated from 1960-2003 and served the greater New York area and beyond. This essay traces the evolution of the center including the creation of the Union Catalog of Medical Periodicals and the demise of the center occasioned by changes in scholarly publishing, technology, and constituent needs.

RESUMO

Erich Meyerhoff was an academic health sciences librarian and a distinguished member of the Medical Library Association when he was invited to present the Janet Doe Lecture in 1977. His lecture on the state of the association is considered one of the finest Doe lectures and is still relevant more than forty years later, not only from an historical perspective, but also for his projections for the future and his prescient comments about the future of hospital librarianship and the important role of women in the association. Key 1977 Doe lecture topics are reviewed and updated in the context of the current health sciences library environment.

RESUMO

As a medical student and during his preacademic time prior to 1958, Horst Stoeckel was interested in the history of medicine and especially history related to anesthesia. After his retirement from Chair of Anesthesiology at the University of Bonn in 1994, Stoeckel received a gift from Professor Richard Kitz of Harvard University (Boston, MA) that encouraged him to develop his collection of 150 artifacts and 350 books and periodicals into a scientific museum and library. The late librarian, Patrick P. Sim, MLS, of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology in the United States also encouraged and supported Stoeckel with literature concerning anesthesia history. The Horst Stoeckel Museum of Anaesthesiology (Horst-Stoeckel-Museum fur die Geschichte der Anasthesiologie) was dedicated by the University of Bonn and opened to the public on October 9, 2000, and currently has more than 1000 items displayed in 45 themed display cases. A newly themed concept of Incremental Development of Eminent Anesthesia Landmarks to Operational Routine was developed for the display and explanation of the history of anesthesia related to pioneers, equipment, books, and manuscripts. A display concept combining Person, Publication, and Apparatus is used throughout the museum. A well-stocked library currently holds more than 13,000 books and periodicals. The museum's 10-year anniversary was celebrated with a symposium entitled "German Pioneers in Anaesthesia of the first 100 years," held at the University of Bonn on October 8, 2010. The museum's Web site in German, English, and French is www.anaesthesia-museum.uni-bonn.de.

RESUMO

This article is part of a series in this regular feature which looks at new directions in health science libraries. This paper highlights new initiatives aimed at ensuring health libraries can contribute to the development of Uganda in the 21st century and the challenges facing libraries. It stresses that for libraries to be successful they need to form networks and collaborations for resource sharing; take advantage of the benefits of information technology; computerise their library systems; as well as invest in the development of staff. The paper highlights the main challenge facing the library service as inadequate funding both from government for public-funded health libraries and the private sector (for privately funded health libraries). The paper concludes that, despite the bottlenecks brought about by inadequate funding, Ugandan health libraries have taken positive steps to support health research and education, as well as patient care, not just for Uganda, but for the whole of the East African region. J.M.

RESUMO

When I think of Beverly Murphy, AHIP, FMLA, three words come to mind: Bold, Brave, Brilliant. In every action that Beverly has undertaken as a health sciences librarian, she has demonstrated an innate ability to just "Be." Being bold, brave, and brilliant is just what she will need to be as the Medical Library Association's first African-American president since the association's founding in 1898.

The Library Extension Service is the appropriate method a library has to expand into the community in a way that users who dont visit it use its services and documents. However, just a few people know its history and development through time. A bibliographic review is shown along with the current state of this service. The elements included in it cover regular publications, web sites and electronic journals published from the XVIII century to the present time. The paper expects to provide a historical approach to the library extension service in libraries(AU)
